The village of Zirahuén is a small collection of homes and resident serving tiendas (shops) laid out in a patchwork of dirt, cobblestone and gravel roads. Typical of Mexican villages, the center of town features an impressive colonial-style church and a nicely landscaped plaza with the requisite fountain.

Lago Zirahuén is so stunningly beautiful and tranquil, it has a lot to offer tourists who are interested in natural beauty and outdoor activities such as hiking, boating (the non-motorized variety), sport fishing, bicycling, and horseback riding.

This incredible view lot is the perfect get a way……. Just 3 hours from San Miguel de Allende.

Bringing San Miguel, Mexico home

THE OTTAWA CITIZEN

Local artist Crystal Beshara says that for years people kept asking her: “Have you heard of San Miguel?” When one of her Glebe Community Centre students brought in a pamphlet with photos of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, she says “I got the picture and it was loud and clear.”

“San Miguel is truly an artist’s paradise, and I had to see it for myself.”

Last January, Beshara and five of her students travelled to the picturesque town.

“Exploring San Miguel is like walking into a living, breathing painting,” says Beshara.

“Much of this undisturbed beauty has to do with the fact that in 1926, San Miguel de Allende was declared a national monument. No intrusive billboards, neon lights or fast-food chains are permitted within the city centre. With its beautifully restored architecture and much of the city remaining Spanish speaking, I felt as though I was seeing the real Mexico.”

Beshara says that she briefly wondered why San Miguel, which has been ranked one of the Top 10 travel destinations in the world, has remained something of a secret.

She concluded that it’s probably because once they visit, so many Americans and Canadians never want to return home — so they stay there.

Beshara is going back: she’ll lead two 11-day watercolour workshops in San Miguel De Allende in January.

Until Nov. 23, at a show entitled Bringing Home San Miguel, you can see paintings done by Beshara and her students at IPO Gallery, 110 O’Connor St. You can meet the artists at an opening reception Nov. 1 from 5 to 8 p.m.
